Is monestra toxic to babies?Monestra is a very popular plant, despite the beauty of this plant an if we overlook the fact that it can add some natural beauty to the space, it can absorb the carbon dioxide and make oxygen.
But the real question is, are they poisonous to babies?
In Monestra plant there calcium oxalate crystals that are potent irritant, if it is bitten by children or pets it will cause irritation of the mouth and tongue and also it will cause swallowing problems.
What are calcium oxalate crystals?
Calcium Oxalate crystals are needle shaped microscopic crystals which is found in every part of monestar plants including leaves, stem and saps.
Calcium oxalate crystals has lots of jobs including they help the plant to not get eaten by other animals and get rid of unwanted minerals that are harmful to the plant.
While they are beneficial to plant the are harmful to humans and animals and it causes irritation to tongue and moth.
Is it toxic to babies?
Well it definitely will hurt the baby but if it is consumed in high amount you need to rush the baby to the doctor for unwanted consequences.
If your kid has consumed some Monestra will display some reaction, and as I said it will irritate you child`s tongue and mouth and if it gets worse it may also block the baby from breathing.
Best thing is to keep the plant from out of reach of the children and be sure they will not get close to it.
If your children bite the plant, he or she will experience difficulty swallowing and breathing. Most common reactions are pain in the throat and reactions like coughing and if it touches the skin, Monestra sap will also lead to skin rash and if it get contact with your eyes, it will cause irritation or abrasions.
Treatment
If your child or pet bites the plant first thing you need to do is rinse their mouth with water because it will take most of the calcium oxalate crystals out of the mouth, remember to not allow them to swallow the water.
It is no joke they will be very dangerous in high amounts and will kill the person or the pet, so be extremely careful with it.
How to keep babies and pets away from the plant?
- First you can place physical barriers between plants and babies or pets.
- Plant cabinet is good idea, it will look beautiful and will keep plant out of reach
- Be sure the dead leaves are properly disposed of
